News headlines in 2017 were dominated for weeks at a time with coverage of natural disasters striking parts of the United States — from Hurricane Harvey flooding homes in Houston, to Hurricane Irma destroying houses in Florida, to wildfires decimating swaths of homes in California. All told, the costs of these incidents are likely to make 2017 the costliest year on record for natural disasters.
If you live in an area or state that is at a higher risk for wildfires, it’s important to make sure that your home inventory is kept up to date, and is stored in a safe location-consider keeping a copy in a secure digital location “in the cloud” so that even if your computer or laptop are damaged, you’ll still be able to access a copy. A safe deposit box or a fire-resistant safe are two options for physical copies.
Don’t put off grading your yard if you notice signs of bad drainage. Repairing your landscaping and the foundation of your house will prove to be much more expensive than fixing the immediate drainage problem, and once it’s fixed, you could make your house worth more. Grading will help you sleep better at night when that next thunderstorm rolls in, because you’ll know the water will be successfully diverted away from your house.
